Changzhou has been reputed as a cradle of talented people since ancient times. In Spring and Autumn Period, Changzhou’s ancestor Ji Zha was well known for his scholarship and integrity.

In the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Xiao Tong, the editor of Zhao Ming Anthology and his clan had become accomplished in the field of literature, history and music. In Ming dynasty, Chen Ji compiled Yongle Encyclopedia. In Qing Dynasty, linguist Duan Yucai, and ideologist Gong Zizhen both achieved outstanding performance in their own fields. During the period of over one thousand years since the imperial civil service examination system was adopted in Sui and Tang Dynasties to the end of Qing Dynasty, total 9 top rank successful candidates, 8 second rank successful candidates and 11 third rank successful candidates, and total 1,546 successful candidates came from Changzhou. Since Ming and Qing dynasties, Changzhou Five Schools, namely Changzhou School, Yanghu Literature School, Changzhou Pome School, Changzhou Chinese Traditional Painting School and Menhe Medicine School sprang up and produced far-reaching effects, which become a wonder in China cultural history.

In modern Changzhou, Changzhou Three Heroes, namely Mr. Qu Qiubai, Mr. Zhang Tailei and Mr. Yun Daiying were born here, and a large number of renowned scholars and masters sprang up from Changzhou, such as Li Gongpu, Shi Liang, Zhao Yuanren, Liu Haisu, Hua Luogeng and so on. After the founding of the PRC, Changzhou has cultivated more than 60 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Engineering Academy.
